Mens Artistic Gymnastics

Men’s Team Program (MAG)

This is a general outline of the competitive stream of Men’s Artistic Gymnastics. Each level and age group has specific requirements. Age Categories are determined by birth year. Competitive category is determined by technical staff. Regular attendance, progress and participation at competitions and other activities is required. There are two possible pathways for male athletes: (1) Elite and (2) Provincial. Athletes may move between pathways in order to meet the demands and requirements of the program and as determined by competitive results.

Provincial Pathway (MAG)
The Provincial Pathway consists of 6 levels. Provincial 1, 2 and 3 compete within their Province. Provincial levels 4 and 5 compete in Regional competition (Westerns and Eastern Championships), and National Open competes at Canadian Championships.

Elite Pathway (MAG)
Elite athletes work on a four year plan known as the Olympic Games Cycle (or Quadrennial). Athletes who are aspiring to the International level know that the opportunities to represent their country are determined by many factors including the number of athletes eligible for such events, their age, content of routines and ability to perform on demand. There are times when athletes who hold dual citizenship may be asked or choose to represent a country other than Canada. This is a strategic decision that may afford an athlete and coach the international exposure and development opportunities that assist with the ultimate goal of international excellence. High performance athletes who are not on any national team, often participate at international meets on behalf of VPG. The coaches will determine competitions that will benefit these athletes in their quest to excellence including the opportunity to be scouted for athletic scholarships to the US.

The Elite Pathway consists of 6 Categories of competition, Elite 1- 4, Junior and Senior. Elite 3 and Elite 4 categories are required to participate at Western Canadian Championships but do not compete at Canadian Championships or Elite Canada. Junior and Senior categories are required to participate at Elite Canada and the Canadian Championships. For all categories except Senior, scores from Physical Tests will be added to the scores from their Optional and Compulsory competition to determine an athlete’s AA score.
